What are IAS Exams?

IAS Exams (popularly known as Civil Services Exams) are being conducted every year in India to fill prestigious posts like IAS (Indian Administrative Service), IPS (Indian Police Service), IFS (Indian Foreign Service), IRS (Indian Revenue Service) and many other central government services.
The Civil Services Exams (IAS Exams) are conducted in three phases.

Phase I
CSAT (Civil Services Aptitude Test) in August
Phase II
Mains (Civil Services Mains) in December
Phase III
Personality test (interview) in Feb/Mar of the following year

Preliminary Examination (CSP)


CSP consists of two papers which is common for all candidates from 2011 i.e., No optional paper is there in CSP form 2011.This is the first stage of Civil Services Examination. This is an Objective type examination consisting of Two Papers that is common to all candidates from 2011 having special emphasis on testing their “aptitude for civil services” as well as on “ethical and moral dimension of decision making”. Normally, there are about 3 lakh applications for the preliminary examination. From this, the UPSC selects 10 to 12 folds of vacancies for the main examinations. This is only for the selection and not to be taken into consideration in the main ranking.
Subjects for Preliminary Examination



• As per the decision of Government of India, there shall be change in the syllabus and pattern of the Preliminary Examination from 2011 in the scheme of the Civil Services Examination.



• The Preliminary Examination shall now comprise of two compulsory Papers of 200 marks each and of two hours duration each. Detailed below is the new syllabus and pattern of the Preliminary Examination, which is brought to the notice of the prospective candidates intending to appear at the Civil Services Examination (CSE) in 2011 onwards:




Paper I - (200 marks) Duration: Two hours

• Current events of national and international importance

• History of India and Indian National Movement

• Indian and World Geography - Physical, Social, Economic geography of India and the World.

• Indian Polity and Governance – Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.

• Economic and Social Development – Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc.

• General issues on Environmental ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change - that do not require subject specialization

• General Science.



Paper II- (200 marks) Duration: Two hours

• Comprehension

• Interpersonal skills including communication skills;

• Logical reasoning and analytical ability

• Decision making and problem solving

• General mental ability

• Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude etc.) (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. -Class X level)

• English Language Comprehension skills (Class X level).

• Questions relating to English Language Comprehension skills of Class X level (last item in the Syllabus of Paper-II) will be tested through passages from

English language only without providing Hindi translation thereof in the question paper.


• The questions will be of multiple choice, objective type.


Who is the eligible for IAS Exams?

Educational Qualification: Any degree holder (or degree final year students who can get the degree by July of the exam year) from any recognized University in any discipline with any percentage is eligible
Age Qualification: A general category candidate must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 30 years on 1st August of the exam year. OBC/SC/ST/PH category candidates can avail age relaxation
Attempts limit: A general category candidates can attempt the exams up to 4 times (applying and not appearing for any paper does not count as an attempt. Appearing for one or more papers count as an attempt). OBC/PH category candidates can attempt the exams up to 7 times. SC/ST candidates can attempt any number of times as long as their age limit is within the eligibility range.

Syllabus for CSAT 2013: - the CSAT test will be divided into two sections i.e. General Awareness and English Proficiency.

For General Awareness:- Current affairs at national and international level, History of India (Indian National Movement), Indian and World Geography, Indian Constitution & Politics, Economic & Social Development and General Science.

English: - Reading Comprehensions, Grammar, Communication skills, Logical Reasoning and mental ability.

IAS Syllabus - Mains 2013 - New Pattern
UPSC made major changes in the syllabus as well as pattern of the Main Exam.
 These changes will be applicable for IAS Main Exam-2013. Candidates
appearing for the IAS 2013 need to note about the changes in the scheme of
 civil services (main) examination. Also, it is very important to note that
certain changes have been implemented in respect to the choice of language
 medium in the Main examination. He Main examination will comprise of seven
 papers in all.

PAPER-I
: English 300 marks (Section 1 Essay-200 Marks
Section 2 English Comprehension & English Précis-100 Marks)
PAPER-II: General Studies- I: Indian Heritage and Culture, 
History and
 Geography of the World and Society-250 Marks
PAPER-III: General Studies- II: Governance, Constitution,Polity, Social Justice
 and International relations-250 Marks
PAPER-IV: General Studies-III: Technology, Economic Development,
 Bio diversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management-250 marks
PAPER-V: General Studies- IV: Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude-250 Marks
PAPER-VI : Optional Subject Papers I 250 Marks
PAPER VII: Optional Subject Papers II 250 Marks
Personality Test (Interview)- 275 Marks

IAS Preparation

One of the essential tips to crack IAS exam is proper planning with devotion. Since
 IAS is among the toughest exams in India, it is recommendable for students to
 take up any of the top coaching institutes that prepare well to crack IAS. Candidates
 should improve writing skills as the exam includes important papers like English 
and Essay, in both the papers subjective questions are asked. Make sure that you
 have the best authors’ books thatcover almost entire portions of the subjects that
 you have chosen. Having a glance at previous years’ papers is always conduct.
